Concerning defense, Wheaton North (11-5) had it all over Wheaton Academy (8-9).

The Falcons forced 25 turnovers and 12 in the pivotal second quarter.

Dave Pilalis made 6 steals to go with his 13 points, contributing to Andrew Jahns’ game-high 16 points. John Bagge scored 11 and Steve Pierotti had 4 steals for Wheaton North.

“It’s a big win,” Pilalis said. “Coach Naz (Jim Nazos) always says next game’s always our biggest game. We came out and showed it tonight.”

A pair of Pilalis 3-pointers got the Falcons off to an 11-3 lead, but Wheaton Academy went on an 8-0 run spanning the first and second quarters to get within 17-16 on a drive by John Albaugh at 4:50 of the second.

Nazos took time, the full-court press took effect, and Wheaton North used a 14-0 run to end the half leading 31-16, forcing the Warriors into 8 consecutive turnovers.

“And that was the game right there,” said Wheaton Academy coach Paul Ferguson.

The Warriors’ Joel Malmquist had his 3-point set shot working, 5 of them for 15 points. Ben Euler added 9 points on three 3s.

“I thought we played well and got a win in a Wheaton setting,” Nazos said. “I guess it may add a little bit more.”
