The Wheaton Academy Warriors (8-8) continued solid play against the home Walther Broncos (7-9) Friday night in Melrose Park. The team's defense held Walther to just 22 first half points and 40 for the game in the 57-40 victory which ups WA's PSL record to 3-2 on the season.
Wheaton Academy attacked Walther's 3-2 zone with varying success in the first quarter, scoring 10 points in the period, six of those off of two three-pointers from Benjamin Euler (9 points). The Warriors played better in the second half, but still only manged a three-point lead at the conclusion of the second quarter by the hand of Joel Malmquist (4 points) who knocked down a baseline 10-footer as time expired.
With renewed focus on defensive intensity, the third quarter was in the control of the visiting team. Walther's offensive attempts were matched and defeated via Warrior defense who held the Broncos to just 7 points in the quarter. Senior co-captain Axel Cerny (10 points, 4 steals) jump started WA with two field goals from long range as well as a fast break lay-in in the second half.
The lead Wheaton Academy had built never wavered in the final period. All ten active players for the Warriors played tonight including Mike Lindstedt and Sean Berbert. Jeremy Parker (13 points, 4 rebounds) led all scores, as well as big-man Nate Williams (12 points, 5 rebounds). Jason VanderVeen dished off 8 assists as well. The win tonight becomes a defining moment in the season as WA moves back up to the .500 mark (8-8) as they head into next week's Superman Classic in Metropolis.
Injury note: John Albaugh (banged/hurt knee) and Josh Butterfield (ankle) did not play tonight.
