Paducah, Kentucky—In the first game of the 23rd Annual Superman Classic hosted by Massac County High School, Wheaton Academy's intention of a win was altered by the Sikeston Bulldogs out of Missouri. The Warriors played well at times, but never could break open the lead against Sikeston, who scored all but two outside shots in the first half off of free throws and athletically-oriented layups. The Bulldogs also hurt WA throughout the game by converting on second chance opportunities, and most of all, hitting their free throws. Sikeston hit a staggering 26 of 29 free throws for the game compared to a lowly 8 of 14 for Wheaton Academy.
The Warrios led 19-16 at the end of the first quarter despite giving their oponents layup after layup. A two-point lead at the half still kept WA in control with a number of things to work on in the second half. In the third quarter the two teams stayed even with each other, but the dagger for the Warriors was the fourth quarter when Sikeston outscored them 21-12 en route to victory. Wheaton Academy was down 72-70 with 15 seconds left to go, but after a missed shot they were forced to foul. Sikeston hit both free throws, and then two more to seal the deal 76-70.
Jeremy Parker (16 points, 4 rebounds) and Nate Williams (15 points, 8 rebounds) led the Warriors tonight. The loss comes as a disappointment in more ways than one for WA who will play the winner of Massac and Hopkinsville on Thursday. The loss drops them into the consolation bracket for the tournament.
Tournament Note: The Massac/Hopkinsville game (scheduled to be played after WA's game tonight) was post-poned until tomorrow night due to Hopkinsville not showing up.
