In a key Private School League matchup Friday night, Wheaton Academy met conference heavyweight Illiana Christian. The Warriors began their night a little awkwardly, but regained composure closing out the quarter just two point behind. Jason VanderVeen contributed five straight points (3-point basket, layup) in the first quarter.
Wheaton Academy continued solid play in this back-and-forth game. They set the pace for the game, playing confidently, though taking some ill-advised shots. Going into the locker room, they led 26-21.
Turnovers and missed free throws started to hurt WA in the third quarter, and things started to turn Illiana's way. Down one with 3:38, the Vikings stretched their lead to 4 at the end of the quarter.
Wheaton Academy failed to have a consistent continuety offensively. Missed free throws, and missed layups is what gave the Warriors a loss tonight. The game was still very close, even with the way WA played. The team will need to rest quickly in preparation for tomorrows game at Lisle against a team who found their way in the Elite Eight last year - Peoria Christian at 1:00 PM. |
