WA vs. Chicago Chrisian, 02/19/07

Win 64-51

Coming off a non-conference loss to Streamwood, the Warriors were determined to win in the PSL. The Warriors ended up at least 14 points in each quarter to cruise to a 64-51 victory over Chicago Christian High School. They were led by Quinn Gorski at point, and in scoring by Dave Toellen (20 pts) and Mark Fernandes (10 pts)

WA vs. Streamwood, 02/13/07

Loss 71-74

After scoring only eight points in the first quarter, the Warriors scored 53 points in the next three quarters. The guys were down by 9 with two mintues left in regualtion, but managed to claw their way into overtime. But in OT, they just did not have enough momentum, had four players foul out, and lost the game as Dave Toellens shot went off the front of the rim at the buzzer. Tim Streets had 24 points, including the shot to send the game into OT. Dave Toellen also had 24 points.

WA vs. Holy Trinity, 02/07/07

Win 63-51

On Wednesday night, the sophomore boys managed to get their biggest lead of the game with a minute left to play. Until then, Holy Trinity kept the Warriors at bay with their constant pressure, trapping zone and attack on offense. Led by Josh Rak (21 pts) and Quinn Gorski at point guard, the Warriors started to pull away late in the third quarter and early in the fourth. But the game was never out of reach. It took a good team effort to pull off the win and put the Warriors above .500 for the first time since late December.

WA vs. Luther North, 02/03/07

Win 52-26

On senior night at Wheaton Academy, the sophomore boys were one of five teams to win on saturday. After an 11-3 first quarter score and 30-11 at halftime, the Warriors never looked back. By the ned of the third quarter the lead expanded to 30 points. The final score was 52-26. The Warriors had great bench contributions for Jake Jones, Alex McCoy, and Dan Schmitz. Josh Rak led all scorers with 11 points.

WA vs. Montini, 01/27/07

Loss 54-57

The Warriors came out of the blocks with a 9-0 run in the first quarter, and 20-14 through the quarter. The lead was lost, with the score 27-27 at halftime. Montini came out firing in the third quarter and the Warrirors never got it back. The boys lost 54-57, with Mark Fernandes and Dave Toellen leading the scorers with 14 and 15 respectively.

WA vs. Luther South, 01/26/07

Win 67-55

Luther South tried to slow down the Warriors with their zone defense and slow offensive pace, but
the Warriors came back in the fourth quarter to win the game by 12 points. Tim Streets led all
scorers with a career high 35 points; coming from 5 2-pointers, 7 3-pointers, and 4-4 FTs.

WA vs. Aurora Christian, 01/19/07

Loss 50-62

The Warriors played Aurora Christian for the second time this season. This time Aurora had managed to end the game well. After a 17-10 WA advantage after the first quarter, the sophomores scored only 12 points in the next two quarters. By that time, Aurora held an 11 point advantage and the Warriors let the game slip farther out of reach. The leading scorers for the game for Wheaton Academy were Tim Streets (12 pts) Josh Rak (12 pts) and Mark Fernandes (11 pts).

WA vs. Chicago Hope Academy, 01/16/07

Win 54-49

Despite a lopsided win the first time these two teams met, the Warriors expected a tough game. Chicago Hope Academy is coached by Jon Nielson, former graduate and all-conference player for Wheaton Academy. He had his guys playing hard the whole time. WA had a 16 point lead at one point in the third quarter but never managed to put the game out of reach. The Warriors ended up winning the game 54-49. Leading scorers for the game were Tim Streets (22pts) and Jordan Valleskey (9 pts).

WA vs. Wheaton North, 01/13/07

Loss 50-64

Wheaton North used a good inside game and tough ball pressure to handle the Warriors in a 50-64 loss. Wheaton Academy was in it for much of the first three quarters, but missed the front end of four one-and-ones to let the game slip out of reach. Leading scorers for the game were Tim Streets (15 pts) and Quinn Gorski (14 pts).

WA vs. Walther Lutheran, 01/12/07

  Win 60-58

Walther kept the game close with pressure and good outside shooting on Friday night, but the sophomore boys managed to pull out a tight victory, 60-58. Walther tied the game up with 15 seconds left but Dave Toellen hit the game winning jumper with one second on the clock to put the Warriors up by two. The leading scorers for the game were Dave Toellen (13 pts),  Mark Fernandes (12 pts) and Josh Rak (11 pts). Tim Streets and Quinn Gorski both contributed 9 pts a piece while Jordan Valeskey and Dan Schmitz had great bench contributions and both had 3 points.

WA vs. West Chicago, 01/09/07

Loss 46-66

WA had trouble maintaining it's intensity throughout the whole game, while West Chicago used a strong third quarter to put the Warriors away. The boys lost 46-66 to the Wildcats. The Warriors were led in scoring by Mark Fernandes (12pts), Dave Toellen (10 pts) and Josh Rak (10pts).

Westmont Christmas Tournament

Loss vs. Lake Park 36-41
Win vs. Lisle 64-52
Loss vs. Westmont 38-44


The sophomore boys went 1-2 in the Westmont Holiday tournament.
 
The opening game versus Lake Park was exciting to the end. The Warriors held a five point lead with 2 minutes left in the game, but Lake Park came on with a 10-point run to the end the fourth quarter. The Warriors were led in scoring by Josh Rak with 17 points.
 
The second game saw a familiar matchup versus Lisle. Three weeks before, the Warriors had beat the Lions by two in a very tight game. With some adjustments made, Wheaton Academy prevailed in the game, 64-52. There was balanced scoring from WA, with contributions from Tim Streets (12 pts), Dave Toellen (19 pts) and Josh Rak (16 pts).
 
The third game of the tournament was the most disappointing. Westmont went on a 18-0 first quarter run to start the game, and Wheaton had to battle back the rest of the time. The sophomore boys never quite got over the hump, bringing it back to as close as 5 points twice in that game. The leading scorers for the game were Quinn Gorski (8 pts) and Mark Fernandes (8 pts).

12/16/06 vs. St. Francis

Loss 43-66
The sophomore boys lost their third game in a row, losing to St. Francis 43-66. After a slow start,
the Warriors battled back in the second and third quarters. A late surge by the Spartans (25-7 run)
finished off the Warriors. The team was led in scoring by Mark Fernandes with 15 points.

12/15/06 vs. Timothy

Loss 38-45
The sophomore boys struggled to get started Friday night. After one half, Timothy held a 23-15
edge. The Warriors had three 2 point field goals all game, but went to the line 33 times, converting
on 21 of those attempts. The Warriors went up by one with two minutes remaining, but Timothy
reeled of 11 straight points. Leading scorers for the game were Tim Streets (16 pts) and Mark
Fernandes (10 pts).

12/12/06 vs. Benet Academy

Loss 40-56
Going into the Benet game, the team knew it would be physical and intense. At the end of the game, Benet proved its worth. The Warriors never met their intensity level. Each short little run was ousted by the dominant play of Benet's center (21 points). Wheaton Academy's offense struggled all night. WA was led on offense by Josh Rak (10 pts) and Mark Fernandes (9 pts). The Warriors next game will be Friday night at 4:30 at Timothy Christian.

12/09/06 vs. Chicago Hope Academy

Win 75-45
The sophomore boys team won their first away game of the season, beating Chicago Hope
Academy 75-45. At halftime, the Warriors had a 12 point lead. That was the closest Chicago Hope
Academy would get. The Warriors had good offensive contributions from Quinn Gorski, Josh Rak
(19 points), Mark Fernandes and Jake Jones. Dave Toellen and Tim Streets had great overall games.
The Warriors will play on Tuesday versus Benet Academy.

12/08/06 vs. Westminster Christian

Win
The sophomore team struggled through one half of basketball before turning things around and
winning easily on Friday night. The team led 21-22 at halftime, but came out with pressure to
force turnovers which led to fastbreak points. The third quarter had the WA outscore Westminster
25-6. Quinn Gorski led all scorers with 16 points.

11/28/06 vs. Lisle

Win 57-55
The sophomore game came down to the wire again, but this time WA prevailed. Lisle was persistent with their pressure, managing to keep the game close using offensive rebounds for easy putbacks. Tim Streets led WA with 17 points, connecting on three 3-point attempts, while Mark Fernandes had 16 points. The Warriors were 17 of 26 from the FT line for 65%. The sophomore team's next game will be against Westminster at 4:30pm on Friday, Decemeber 8th.

11/25/06 vs. St. Francis

Loss 57-58
The championship trophy eluded the Warriors for the second straight year, as St. Francis prevails in a nail biter, 58-57. It came down to the final seconds before the game could be decided. For the Warriors, the loss was a tought one. The game was physical from the beginning, but the Warriors adjusted. After being down 5 at half, the score was all tied up at 39-39. This brings Wheaton's record to 2-1, facing their next opponent (Lisle) on Tuesday night at 6pm. Dave Toellen led all scorers with 25 points. Dave Toellen also recieved all-tournament honors.

11/24/06 vs. St. Edwards

Win 57-38
The sophomore boys won their second game of the year, 57-38 against St. Eds of Elgin. Wheaton
Academy started the game with a 23-0 run and held their opponents scoreless for a full quarter of
play. Limiting the opponent's second chance points and overall good defense set the tone for the
game early on. The Warriors got the lead and never looked back. They were led by Dave Toellen,
Tim Streets and Mark Fernandes with 17,13, and 12 points respectively.

11/22/06 vs. Aurora Christian

Win 54-51
The sophomore boys basketball team came from behind to win their first game of the season with
a score of 54-51. The talented Aurora Christian team held the Warriors at bay with their attack on
both the offensive and defensive boards. The Warriors needed a 12-0 run to start the fourth
quarter in order to gain the lead for the first time. Wheaton was led in scoring by David Toellen
with 16 points and Mark Fernandes with 15 points.
