Wheaton Academy entered Tuesday night's game, the first game of the St. Charles East Tournament ready to play a tough St. Charles East team on their home court. Displaying their new away maroon uniforms, the Warriors began with a shaky start in the first quarter. Turnovers and missed layups hurt WA early on. Wheaton Academy was consistent in their free throw shooting throughout the first half and the whole game, which accounted for 20 points out of a total of 64.
At the end of the 1st quarter, WA was down by ten, 17-7, though Axel Cerny (2 pts, 3 reb)nearly added three to that score with an in-and-out half-court shot at the buzzer. The Saints maintained a 7-12 point lead until the Warriors went on a 6-0 run with four minutes remaining in the half. WA started to play consistently from this point on and cut the lead to a 35-34 lead for SCE going into the locker room.
The third quarter brought intensity with three-pointers from both Jeremy Parker (13 pts, 4 stls)) and Matt Almaraz (14 pts, 3 reb). John Tillery (9 pts, 7 asts) added two ten-foot jumpers in this run. St. Charles had a 46-45 edge over WA with 2:18 remaining in the 3rd, and it stayed that way--WA was down by two, 50-48 going into the 4th quarter.
The turning point in the game came with 5:09 remaining, when the Saints took a 57-49 lead after Jason VanderVeen (5 pts, 7 reb) committed his fourth personal foul, and a missed layup after an aggressive block off the backboard by Mark Aloisio (17 pts, 4 blk shts). Wheaton Academy never came any closer after this, falling to St. Charles East 76-64.
