Nicolet shocks Wheaton Academy |
A slow start against the No. 6 team in the state of Wisconsin pointed Wheaton Academy toward disaster in the second day of the 39th annual East Aurora Holiday Tournament. Nicolet (6-0) ran out to a 10-0 lead and was up 28-4 by the end of the first quarter. By the half, Wheaton Academy (3-7) was down 45-8, as many people walking into the gym for the first time stared at the scoreboard in disbelief. Indicative of what happened during much of the contest, the visiting Knights used fastbreaks to score their first 5 baskets of the second half. For the game Nicolet shot 67.3 percent from the floor and recorded assists on 19 of their 37 field goals. The Warriors showed some spunk in the third quarter, hitting 3-point shots on three consecutive possessions for a 9-0 run. Unfortunately, Nicolet led 57-17 when the last 3-pointer hit. Wheaton Academy turned the ball over 22 times and was outrebounded 30-18. "It was such a weird game, I don't even know if I have an impression of it," Wheaton Academy coach Andy Euler said. "In the beginning we missed two or three layups that may have made more of a difference to how the game went." Warriors guard Axel Cerney led Wheaton Academy with 10 points, and John Tillery chipped in 5. Wheaton Academy will play Prosser of Chicago's Public League in this afternoon's third round.
