A home game for Wheaton Academy Friday night may have been the motivating factor to get the victory in this PSL matchup. A home game seemed rather foreign to the Warriors, who have only 7 home contests this season, and Friday was only the third of the season. So with a packed Warrior Dome, Wheaton Academy came ready to play.
WA led 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, but ended the first half with a 31-27 disadvantage. Mark Aloisio led the Warriors with 8 first half points, and Jeremy Parker added 6 points off of three-point shots.
Luther North stayed even with Wheaton Academy throughout the third quarter, led by #20 Trimble who lifted Luther to a 38-35 lead going into the final quarter. The turning point in the game came about in the fourth quarter, after Luther's head coach received a technical and then a second. Jason VanderVeen hit 3-of-4 free throws. VanderVeen again connected with his third three-pointer of the game, while Matt Almaraz was fouled getting position for the rebound. With possession again, Almaraz grabbed an offensive board to lay it in and draw the foul. WA scored 9 points within less than one minute.
The Warriors kept a 10-point lead with four minutes to go in the game, and finished strong, finding Axel Cerny, Matt Almaraz, and Nate Williams cutting to the basket for lay-ups. Scoring was evenly distributed among five players for WA: VanderVeen and Almaraz with 12, Cerny and Aloisio with 11, and Jeremy Parker with 9 points. Wheaton Academy improves to 6-16 on the season, and have three home games remaining before entering regional play at Lisle.
