Wheaton Academy loses 46-44 Heartbreaker
Warriors fail to finish against Luther South; score only 14 second half points

Posted January 29, 2005 at 12:08 AM

As the ball was stolen by Luther South with five seconds remaining, then taken down to the other end for the game-winning layup, Wheaton Academy knew it was more than that play that had lost the game for them. The Warriors got off to a great start, scoring 18 first quarter points, and leading 30-27 at the half.

In the third quarter Wheaton Academy started to allow the Braves to make a comeback. Turning the ball over under pressure, Luther South kept it an even game up to the last minutes. With 1:00 left in the fourth, Luther South had a 3-point advantage, 44-41. Jeremy Parker responded with h

is fourth three pointer of the game to tie it up. On the Braves' trip down the court, they threw the ball away, and WA had possession with 44.1 seconds to hold for a final shot. After a timeout at the 15 second mark, the ball was stolen with just seconds remaining and taken down the court for the lay in. The clock showed 0.8 seconds before the timeout could be called, and WA didn't convert with that amount of time left.

Jeremy Parker led the team in scoring with 16 points, while Jason VanderVeen and Mark Aloisio both had 9 points. Axel Cerny added 8. Starting

forward Matt Almaraz sat the game out on the bench due to extreme illness. The loss comes as the 16th for the Warriors, and they fall to 5-16 on the season.

Before the game began, three-time world champion Bill Wennington and current Bull Ben Gordon were on hand in an effort to raise money for the victims of the tsunami disaster. Admission was raised to 10$, and the seven-foot radio analyst and Chicago Bulls guard led the crowd in a couple three-point shooting and free throw contests, followed by giveaways of signed pictures, hats, tickets, and authentic jerseys.
