The 2004-2005 Wheaton Academy Basketball season officially came to an end Tuesday night in an awards/season wrap-up night. With mostly parents and players present, each coach said something about each individual player and the team's season as a whole.

Coach Doug Scheidt led off with a word on the freshmen team's back-and-forth year with a finishing record of 9-9. He expressed a sincere sense of gratitude towards both coach Euler and coach Hockett, in addition to the parents who were involved with much of the season. Coach Scheidt expounded on a couple of the team's three themes/goals from the start of the year. One, to play humbly and learn to live with humility. Secondly to 'play by the law', or to play by the rules in the sense of basketball, because 'true freedom comes from obedience to the law', Scheidt explained. Jason Roy was awarded the Coach's Award, as a player who consistently was an intense encouragement during practices and games. Center Jared Cochrum was named Most Outstanding Player, and was dubbed by Coach Scheidt as one who could 'run the fast break and finish well'. Reference to Jared's game-winning shot in the final game of the season against Aurora Christian was also made known. David Petersons earned Most Improved Player honors, as he developed a nice shot and a toughness on the court. Josiah Reese was given the Rock Award, and BB Taylor's tenacious defense gave him the Defensive Player of the Year award. Coach Scheidt concluded with a thank you to the parents for allowing him to have their sons 'virtually every night for the last four months'. He added that he was excited to see what would become of this team next year at the sophomore level under Coach Hockett.

Matt Hockett, in his second year as sophomore coach after heading the freshmen squad for a number of years, also vocalized his gratitude for the influence of Coach Euler and Scheidt on him over the years. He stressed the team's positive witness they had, making mention of letters received from opposing team's coaches and spectators about the class and sportsmanship that the sophomores exemplified. The team finished with a record of 19-3, losing only to Westminster (MO), St. Francis, and Montini. They started the season winning their first 10 games, including two tournament championships (WA Thanksgiving Invite and Westmont Christmas Invitational). Hockett continued with thanks towards the parents, who had given him the greatest amount of support so far he said, though he "didn't want to start a war by saying that" with the statement. He highlighted Dawn Earl's involvment in coordinating events and dates. Coach Hockett encouraged the sophomores by stressing the lack of working on individual skills today, and how "if you want your dreams to come true, get out of bed" a quote he related to the point he was making. After commenting on individual players, he told of how he had come to love the team, and presented each of them with a notebook symbolizing the need to write down goals for themselves as basketball players, and then attain it.

Coach Andy Euler started off the varsity time with a look at what the the team had done. By outlining philosophically what Wheaton Academy Basketball desires to do as a program, namely to first and foremost honor Christ, he admitted that in all truth, they did not accomplish everything they had wished. He highlighted the team's competitive schedule, and how the team responded to that well for the most part, by staying even with a top-20 in the nation team St. Joseph before falling to them late in the fourth quarter, and bonding well and having great success in the Metropolis tournament over Winterim. The team finished their last home game well on senior night against Aurora Christian well he commented, playing with a passion and intensity that started to become contagious just as the season was ending. Junior Axel Cerny was awarded the Hustle Award, and fellow classmate point-guard Jason VanderVeen was named the Defensive Player of the Year, voted by the team. Senior Bryan Aldridge earned Coach's Award honors, being a strong defensive presence in the post, while taking on a vocal leadership role. Senior Mark Aloisio was named the Most Oustanding Player, averaging 11.6 points per game, and Caleb Stewart was the Most Improved Player, coming up big in the latter part of the season, hitting big shots and playing aggressively. Coach Euler talked about what needs to be done in the off-season in order to be successful next year, as he added to what Coach Hockett had said earlier. The coaches gave each senior additionally a Bible, a tradtition started years ago, and closed the evening with a prayer of dedication geared toward the seniors for their futures.
